Safety

The Sierra HD’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Silverado HD and is only available on Silverado HD LTZ/High Country.

Both the Sierra HD and Silverado HD offer Rear Cross Traffic Alert, but the Sierra HD has Rear Cross Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Silverado HD’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Sierra HD and the Silverado HD have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

Engine

The Sierra HD’s 6.6 turbo V8 diesel produces 25 more horsepower (470 vs. 445) and 65 lbs.-ft. more torque (975 vs. 910) than the Silverado HD’s 6.6 turbo V8 diesel.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Sierra HD has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Silverado HD not available doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Sierra HD has larger standard tires than the Silverado HD (245/75R17 vs. 235/80R17).

The Sierra HD’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 75 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Silverado 3500 HD’s standard 80 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Sierra HD is 2.2 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Silverado HD.

Payload and Towing

The Sierra HD’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the Silverado HD’s (18000 vs. 16410 pounds).

The Sierra HD has a higher standard payload capacity than the Silverado HD:

Ergonomics

The Sierra HD’s standard power windows allow the driver or passenger to lower and raise the windows without leaning over or being distracted. Power windows cost extra on the Silverado HD.

The Sierra HD’s standard power locks allow the driver or passenger to lock or unlock all the doors at a touch without leaning over. Power locks cost extra on the Silverado HD.

The Sierra HD SLT/AT4/Denali’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Silverado HD’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Sierra HD offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Silverado HD doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.
